Amy and Roger's Epic Detour - Morgan Matson (4.5 stars)Morgan Matson has done an amazing job on her debut novel!Amy and Roger’s epic detour is the story about two people being forced to take a four day trip from California to Connecticut, however instead of following the dull route that Amy’s mother has planned for them, they decide to take a detour instead. Both Amy and Roger have had a lot to deal with recently; Amy with death of her father and Roger with the break up with his girlfriend he loved. What I enjoyed most about Matson’s writing was that we weren’t given the insights into Amy and Roger’s heartbreak straight away. With Amy we were given short snippets of Amy’s story until we finally understood how the accident happened. I found it especially sad when Amy was recalling the memories of the good times she had with her dad. I also enjoyed the secondary characters we met on Amy and Roger’s road trip; sweet Bronwyn and quirky and kind Leonard and Lucien. What made Amy’s and Roger’s epic detour interesting was the visual aids used. The book was turned into a sort of scrapbook with photos of places they’d seen, food they ate, flyers, emails and even receipts, it made the road trip seem even more real. Amy and Roger’s epic detour was a fun and sweet story about two people taking an unforgettable adventure. It’s a book which makes you long for those hot summer days and endless road trips!
