Through the Ever Night (Under the Never Sky, #2) - Veronica Rossi Through the Ever Night was more of a gutsier aching read than I first expected. Despite enjoying Under the Never Sky, I didn’t click with it as I did with Through the Ever Night; this novel just took it up a whole another notch. I remember telling my sister that I was going to read Through the Ever Night for a little while and I would be down soon (my sister never lets me read in peace) so there I was all cool, calm and collected expecting to read a few chapters, but NO! Rossi decided to play with my feelings and leave me a quivering wreck. So after an hour or so when I hadn’t come down, my sister came up to check what was up, she found me glued to my kindle with a crazy look in my eyes. My sister knows me so well that she shut the door and creeped back out. And I’m glad she did as Through the Ever Night in comparison to Under the Never Sky was completely unputdownable. In Through the Ever Night, we’re reunited with our favourite characters being pushed to their limits. Perry is now Blood Lord of the Tides, but he’s finding it a difficult position to live up to, with a lot of the people of the Tides not even listening to him. Then there’s Aria she’s lost everything, she has Perry by her side but she still needs to find the Still Blue in order to get Talon back. And Roar, he would do anything to get Liv back, but has no clue where to even look.I thought that Rossi would finally give the characters we had come to know and love a break in Through the Ever Night, but no, there were forced to face hurdle after hurdle, until eventually they were nearly broken. It was horrendous having to watch these characters experience so much pain and heartache. At times I wanted to switch my kindle off and never turn it back on again. But I knew in my heart I could never do this, I needed to know how their journey would end.Perry, Aria and Roar had come a long way from when we came to know them in Under the Never Sky with everything thrown their way; with dangerous Aether storms on the horizon, food supplies in the Tides low and mistrust amongst everyone, Perry, Aria and Roar had to do everything in their power to turn things around. I adored how in so many situations with their backs against the wall they soldiered on through sheer strength and determination. It could have taken the littlest thing to mess with their head and let everything fall apart. But at the end of the day, they were true to themselves in remembering who they were and providing a reassuring shoulder whenever needed. It was horrible seeing some of the characters at their lowest; my heart went out to them on numerous occasions. I wanted to wrap them up in cotton wool and a blanket and keep them safe for ever. The brilliant aspect of this book was that I never had an inkling of which way things could go, there was so much devastation, violence and enemies lurking around everywhere that you had to keep your eyes peeled all the time. You never knew what someone’s true interests were or when they could turn their back on you. And Aria, Roar and Perry were quick to learn this and find that sometimes allies are in places you least expect them to be.Veronica Rossi nailed this book with its dark undertones, frenzied pace and heartache along the way. My uncertainty that I had began with when I first picked up Under the Never Sky has long disappeared, and now I’m just left with a strong yearning for the third and final book.
